Companies churn out a burgeoning volume of transactional data, capturing trillions of bytes of information about their customers, suppliers, and operations. Millions of networked sensors are being embedded in the physical world in devices such as mobile phones, smart energy meters, automobiles, and industrial machines that sense, create, and communicate data in the age of the Internet of Things. Indeed, as companies and organizations go about their business and interact with individuals, they are generating a tremendous amount of digital `exhaust data,' i.e., data that are created as a by-product of other activities. Social media sites, smartphones, and other consumer devices including PCs and laptops have allowed billions of individuals around the world to contribute to the amount of big data available. And the growing volume of multimedia content has played a major role in the exponential growth in the amount of big data. All is not as morbid as it looks. On the brighter side, data is and will remain your business' messiah for a long time now. With a proper IT data management system in place, you can use the data you collect to help create pictures of what your clients like. That way you can give them what they want. This is also helpful when it comes to how you market to them. Data knowledge gives you a better idea of what messages will matter to them most. Now, there are different tools available in the market that can help you do the same and not push you to go one-man-army to get an in-house development team to design a solution. In this edition of CIO Insider, we have laid stress on the Enterprise Data Management Solution enablers and the Productivity tools providers. Combines, these vendors have led us to believe that data, though however uncontrolled, it may seem, can be tamed and put to a 100 percent efficient use. This means, not 1 bit of your data can go wasted. Because, as they say, Data is Money.Let us know what you think.
