Amazon Expands Quick Commerce Service to Delhi

According to reports, Amazon has begun offering its quick commerce service, Amazon Now, in a few localities in Delhi, expanding beyond Bengaluru, where it launched the service last month.

“It's a large part of western Delhi right now, but it's a very rapidly evolving network. So, you'll very soon see it live across Delhi,” Abhinav Singh, vice-president of operations for India and Australia at Amazon.

The ecommerce giant plans to enhance the service in these two cities in the upcoming months before extending the network to additional cities.

Amazon is establishing 10-15 dark stores, or small warehouses, to facilitate deliveries in Bengaluru and plans to expand the service in the coming weeks. The broader rollout followed several internal trials.

Akshay Sahi, director of Prime, deliveries and returns at Amazon in India, stated that in Delhi and Bengaluru, the pilots will quickly transform into full-fledged operations.

“Wherever we've launched, we're witnessing significant reactions from Prime members.Therefore, you will observe this grow quite rapidly,” Akshay states.

Amazon Prime, the loyalty program of Amazon, provides subscribers with various advantages, such as complimentary shipping, via a paid membership.

The company's entry into quick commerce occurs during a period of rapid expansion driven by competitors such as Blinkit, owned by Eternal, Swiggy’s Instamart, and Zepto, as well as newcomers like Tata Digital-supported BigBasket, Flipkart Minutes, and Reliance’s JioMart.

Amazon Now aims to establish 300 dark stores in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai by the end of this year.

Its competitor in ecommerce, Flipkart, is similarly expanding its quick commerce services rapidly. By the conclusion of this year, Flipkart Minutes aims to establish 800 dark stores nationwide.

The Amazon Now service is presently providing groceries, vegetables, personal care, beauty products, home cleaning supplies, snacks, beverages, and meat, among various other items. Amazon will host its Prime Day event from July 12 to 14. For the business, Prime Day acts as a crucial mid-year sales increase prior to the month-long Diwali shopping period.
