Meta Expands its Third-Party Fact-Checking Program in India
Meta Platforms Inc., is growing its third-party fact-checking program in India by positioning Press Trust of India (PTI) as a specialized fact-checking section within the newswire’s editorial department.
Through Meta platforms, PTI can identify, evaluate and rank content as false thanks to the cooperation.
To prevent the spread of false information, Meta is working with third-party fact-checkers who are accredited by the nonpartisan International Fact-Checking Network. These fact-checkers find, evaluate and rank the most viral false content across social media platforms.
The company has built one of the biggest independent fact-checking networks to check and rank misinformation in over 60 languages.
Currently, it is said that Meta holds a large number of fact-checking partners in India thanks to its cooperation with the PTI.
Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Punjabi, Assamese, Manipuri/Meitei, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Kashmiri, Bhojpuri, Oriya, and Nepali are among the sixteen Indian languages it covers through current fact-checking partners, in addition to English.
Meta filters out content that has been flagged as false, altered, or partially false by fact-checkers, hence reducing its visibility.

Since 2016, about 100 organizations worldwide have been included in Meta's fact-checking initiative.
According to the corporation, the program's main goal is to combat misinformation that spreads quickly, especially blatant frauds with no basis in reality. Provably incorrect assertions that are topical, trending, and important are given priority by fact-checking partners.
