| |November 20188THE RISE OF THE CITIZEN CODERBy Amitabh Ray, Managing Director, Ericsson Global Services, India 1,07,00,000 results (0.50 seconds) this is what I got just by simply searching for `programing with-out coding' in Google search and some of the results went as far back as 2013. Over the last few years a movement known as Citizen Cod-ers have become popular because now it is possible for a tech savvy business user to create applications without knowing how to code. Ac-cording to Gartner, a Citizen Cod-er (a.k.a. Citizen Developer) is "an end user who creates new business applications for consumption by others using development and run-time environments sanctioned by corporate IT".How does this concept of Citi-zen Coder (CC) powered by the low-code or in some extreme cases no-code platforms work? Imagine an HR executive who wants to create a new recruiting and on boarding system. All he needs to do is to use a whiteboard to draw out the pro-cess flow, take a picture of it and a backend software package (quite a few available in the market) will convert it into an application which can then be integrated with the or-ganization's HR system with the help of the IT team. The entire process of coding to create a program is becoming more visual in a sense that what you visualize is what the program will deliver. An HR executive will now have the power to build chat-bots on his own. It is important to differentiate between low-code and no-code platforms. Low-code platforms are most often used by IT and others with some coding knowledge to create mission-crit-ical custom applications. No-code platforms enable business us-ers with no coding skills to solve their own problems and optimize day-to-day operations.According to Forrester the mar-ket for low-code tools will grow to USD 15 billion by 2020. Leading vendors have seen more than 50 percent annual growth. Research-AndMarkets.com predicts the low-code development market will grow to USD 27.23 billion by 2022, a leap from the current USD 4.32 billion. It defines Low Code as "products and/or cloud services for application development that em-ploy visual, declarative techniques instead of programming and are available to customers at low- or no-cost in money and training time to Amitabh Ray is an astute professional with 20 years cross-functional rich experience in corporate strategy, management consulting, program & engagement management, change management & systems integration.
