What has changed is the con-vergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the Low-Code or No-Code platforms. In the summer of last year, a Danish startup Ulzard Technologies IVS introduced a path-breaking AI algorithm called pix2code that did not need human effort to write codes. The AI was self-programmed to build software codes based on just screenshots. Users only need to feed the AI with screenshots of what they want their program to look and function like and it will automat-ically generate code. Pix2code can also code for mul-tiple platforms, such as Android, iOS, and web-based technologies, a task rather difficult for a human cod-er. The algorithm looks at a picture of the layout of an app or the GUI and determines via an iterative process what the underlying code likely looks like. The use of AI in writing software programs is go-ing to disrupt the traditional way we have been work-ing in the IT industry. Gartner predicts that by 2022, at least 40 percent of new application development projects will use virtual AI co-developers to help enterprises keep pace with the demands of digital transformation initiatives.Chinese tech giant Baidu recently launched a no-code platform to build custom machine learning mod-els. The company claimed that; `EZDL is a service plat-form allows users to build custom machine learning models with a drag-and-drop interface. It takes only four steps to train a deep learning model, built specifi-cally for your unique business needs.' The advancements in Cloud technology has fur-thered the case for Citizen Coders. Amazon Web Ser-vice (AWS) is planning to let these coders access to its cloud platform with a low-code development project that lets non-programmers create applications which can run on AWS. Early this year IBM announced it will begin offering low-code development platform Men-dix as part of its Cloud services. However, Low Code or No Code is attracting a fair amount of criticism from developers who comment that if things go wrong, and it will, one will need to understand the code to fix it. Do Citizen Coders have that degree to understanding, they question. However, as the benefits of Citizen Coders are significant enough I think that we will see a combination of pro-fessional coders and citizens working alongside to in-crease the productivity of both. While professionals take care of the heavy lifting, citizen coders can work on the simpler projects focused on solving specific business problems.
