Artificial Intelligence is beginning to transform the commerce industry, evolving from recommendations and customer support to AI agents capable of autonomously finalizing purchases for both consumers and businesses, as noted in a report by Global Payments Inc., which offers technology and services for payment processing.

This signifies a transition from AI being a research instrument to AI engaging actively in transactions.

It mentioned, "In business, the change is only starting." Consumers have found that AI serves as an effective researcher, organizer, and partner in the quest for products and services.

The report highlighted that another developing use of AI is in managing households. For instance, the report mentioned that a busy family leader could direct an AI assistant to generate weekly dinner menus, recommend recipes, and compile a shopping list based on previous purchases, preferred brands, and budget constraints.

With agentic commerce associated with payments, the AI can directly order deliveries without needing repeated authorizations or payment entries.

The report indicated that AI agents can represent owners in handling supplies, renewing or terminating software subscriptions, managing maintenance requirements, and processing payments to suppliers and gig workers.

Tokenized purchases can facilitate these transactions, enhancing security and visibility.

At first, companies utilized AI mainly for customer service, employing natural language tools to respond to inquiries and offer tailored suggestions, resulting in lower costs and enhanced interaction. AI has also been utilized to enhance back-office functions like demand forecasting and inventory control.

In the past few months, AI's function as an independent agent for consumers has started to gain momentum.
As per the survey in the report, awareness of agentic commerce is significantly high among companies, with 15 percent stating they are very knowledgeable about the idea and 72 percent indicating they are somewhat knowledgeable. The subsequent stage includes AI agents executing purchases without further approval or the necessity to re-enter payment information.

Through greater adoption, testing, and ongoing enhancements, agentic commerce is anticipated to provide an enhanced customer experience, superior service, and more robust business connections

In the consumer sector, the report indicated that AI agents can now be instructed to organize a week-long holiday, explore flights and accommodations within a certain budget, and finalize bookings, make deposits, arrange spa services, and even buy attire according to a user's fashion sense, brand choices, and latest closet updates.

Nonetheless, obstacles and dangers persist as the technology advances.
