Is Cloud Gaming the Future?

Gone are those days when we used to worry about the specifications of the computer, space in the hard drive, or availability of the game in the store etc. The video gaming industry has evolved drastically ever since palpable games perched to digital, and now being virtual reality at its forefront.

Cloud gaming, also referred as gaming on demand, is an online game that resides on a company server. A gamer can enter the game by installing a client program, thereby saving the space of the computer and not worry about the specifications.

It was G-cluster that demonstrated cloud gaming technology at the video gaming industry E3 in the year 2000. But a California-based provider of cloud virtualisation technology called On Live officially


launched the first cloud gaming service in 2010 using a small game streaming console, and a special controller. The games that ran in the cloud platforms gave the traditional visual quality since the technology was still in its infancy and thereby it led to latency issues that prevented it from a cutting edge gaming experience.

Since technology by and large started influencing and orchestrating major functions in many sectors, can be the reason why cloud gaming is back on track. With the coming of Google Stadia and Microsoft’s Project xCloud, many companies have started allocating the facility to converge them to user’s smartphones with no visible latency issues. Forecasting the trend, the pouring in of highend systems will leverage the quality of games to benchmark their products. Google Stadia is expected to deliver gamers the ability to stream in 4K at 60 fps. Other players in the domain like Nividia GeForce Now have announced to provide its cloud gaming service to Android devices. For die-hard PC gamers, PlayStation Now allots service to over 750 PS2, PS3, and PS4 titles that can be streamed from the PC.

The choice in cloud gaming service will go with the preference along a particular feature or game. With its wide variety of scope in technological advancements with improved gaming experience for players for its graphics quality and fluidity of games, the market is expected to grow exponentially. The cloud gaming market is expected to mark a CAGR of over 15.3 percent during the forecast period 2019-2024. According to latest sources, Walmart is planning to launch its own cloud gaming service. Cloud gaming in 5G has started in United States and South Korea since several telcos have started testing cloud gaming formats on their 5G networks. Cloud gaming is one of the fastest emerging technology currently, which allow users to stream high-end games on devices backed by a good internet connection.
