
OpenAI Launches Web Browser to Compete With Google Chrome

OpenAI announced the launch of its new web browser called Atlas, which positions the company behind ChatGPT in direct rivalry with Google as increasing numbers of internet users turn to artificial intelligence for information.
By establishing itself as a portal for online searches, OpenAI, currently the most valuable startup globally, could attract greater web traffic and generate revenue through digital advertising.
While OpenAI reports that ChatGPT has over 800 million users, most access the service without payment. The company, based in San Francisco, currently operates at a loss and has been exploring methods to achieve profitability.

The release of OpenAI's browser occurs just months after a company executive indicated interest in acquiring Google's market-leading Chrome browser, should a federal court have mandated its sale to address the monopolistic practices that led to Google's search engine being ruled an illegal monopoly.
However, US District Judge Amit Mehta rejected the Justice Department's request for Chrome's divestiture in the monopoly case last month, reasoning in part that AI industry developments are already transforming the competitive environment.

Chrome's remarkable success may serve as a model for OpenAI's browser venture. When Google launched Chrome in 2008, Microsoft's Internet Explorer held such market dominance that most industry watchers doubted any new browser could pose a serious challenge.
Chrome rapidly attracted numerous supporters by displaying web content faster than Internet Explorer and providing additional benefits that allowed it to disrupt the industry. Microsoft ultimately discontinued Explorer and launched its Edge browser, which functions in a similar manner to Chrome.

Perplexity, another emerging AI company, launched its Comet browser earlier this year. The company also showed interest in acquiring Chrome and later presented an unrequested $34.5 billion bid for the browser that reached an impasse when Mehta ruled against breaking up Google.
