BIAL has revealed the launch of a comprehensive Smart Airside Safety System at KIA, representing a notable advancement in enhancing operational safety and control in essential airside areas.

The system aims to improve safety at cross-service roads where the movements of aircraft and ground vehicles overlap, it stated.

The system integrates AI-driven computer vision, smart automation, and centralized control to enhance safe right-of-way management, boost operational efficiency, and allow for increased accuracy in airside operations, according to reports from Bangalore International Airport Limited, which manages Kempegowda International Airport.

As stated by BIAL, Cross Service Roads (CSR) represent some of the most critical zones in airport operations, necessitating accurate and smooth collaboration between aircraft and ground vehicles.

Historically, right-of-way safeguarding at these intersections depended on manual or semi-manual light activation, which led to reliance on human involvement, heightening the chance of delays, and restricting operational visibility.

BIAL stated that the system employs a real-time situational intelligence framework that integrates vehicle movement detection via computer vision, contextual risk evaluation, and automated signaling into a cohesive operating model.

"AI-powered cameras analyze actions at CSR intersections, recognize possible right-of-way issues, spot non-compliant actions, and confirm zone clearance instantly," it stated.

According to these detections, the system activates automated inset lights to safeguard aircraft right-of-way and reverts to normal signaling once the intersection is verified clear, it stated.

A centralized monitoring and analytics platform records all events digitally, reinforcing governance, compliance, and operational control, it stated.

Precision-driven signal activation enhances traffic movement, reduces unnecessary delays, and improves turnaround efficiency

The airport operator stated that by integrating technology into operations, the system establishes a data-oriented separation layer between aircraft and ground vehicles, greatly minimizing human error, particularly in nighttime and low-visibility situations.

It further creates a scalable basis for predictive safety analytics, facilitating trend analysis, peak-hour optimization, compliance mapping, and risk forecasting to promote ongoing enhancement and better airside governance, it stated.
