Coromandel International, a top agri-solutions provider in India and a member of the Rs 78,000-crore Murugappa Group, has entered into a partnership with Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions (India) to increase its seawater desalination capability from 6 million litres per day (MLD) to 9 MLD.

The firm launched its 6 MLD desalination facility in 2023 to lessen reliance on surface water and improve operational resilience. With this extra capacity, Coromandel further promotes its sustainability goals by implementing innovative, resource-saving water solutions.

The contract was signed by S Sankarasubramanian, managing director and CEO of Coromandel International, along with Gopal Madabhushi, senior vice-president and business unit leader (India and South Asia) at Veolia, in the presence of Coromandel’s senior leadership team.

The collaboration will adopt a build-own-operate (BOO) framework, where Coromandel will offer the required infrastructure assistance, and Veolia contributes its worldwide knowledge in water treatment technology, equipment, and operations. Under the agreement, Veolia will maintain operations of the enlarged desalination plant, guaranteeing ongoing efficiency and sustainability in its operations.

When fully operational, the enhanced plant will satisfy about 60 to 70 percent of Coromandel’s overall water needs at its Vizag facility—significantly lowering dependence on external water sources and bolstering the company’s water resilience.

The collaboration between Coromandel and Veolia embodies a common goal of sustainable change within industrial ecosystems. “This effort enhances Coromandel’s position in responsible manufacturing and reaffirms our dedication to environmental stewardship and effective resource management,” stated Sankarasubramanian.
