Google Targets First Phase of Vizag AI Hub by 2028
According to Alexander Smith, Google's principal of global infrastructure and energy for Asia Pacific, the company aims to finish building the first phase of its Visakhapatnam artificial intelligence (AI) hub in the next 24-30 months and commence initial operations at the 1 gigawatt (Gw) data centre shortly after that.
“We are addressing a multi-variable equation concurrently, ensuring that everything can appear simultaneously at the appropriate moment.” Discussing a complete AI infrastructure stack requires the integration of cabling systems, renewable energy production, and energy transmission frameworks.
“Additionally, the primary data center facilities must also be included,” Smith states.
In April, the firm commenced construction on its 1 GW AI data center facility in Visakhapatnam. The firm has pledged an investment of $15 billion in India from 2026 to 2030 to aid in speeding up the AI transformation in the nation. Google made the announcement about establishing the AI hub in October of the previous year.

According to Smith, the initial phase of the data centre is anticipated to begin operations by the end of 2028, and the company aims to finish construction and launch all phases within the next five years.
“The initial structure constructed is frequently the costliest and most time-consuming… (the total completion) hinges on how quickly we process the insights gained from the first phase.” "We are quite hopeful about it," he stated.

In addition to the infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, Google is focused on installing new sub-sea cables to guarantee direct and rapid connectivity from its AI hub to significant markets in Singapore, Australia, West Asia, and Europe, which will then link to the United States, he stated.
