Google to Build its Biggest Data Center in Visakhapatnam

Google plans to build its biggest data center beyond the United States in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, signifying a significant development in India’s expanding digital infrastructure.

The technology behemoth intends to allocate $10 billion (approximately Rs 88,730 crore) to create a one-gigawatt data center cluster in the city.

As per an official announcement from the Andhra Pradesh Government, the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, has today confirmed the approval of Google's significant hyperscale data center in Visakhapatnam, symbolizing an investment close to $10 billion, which is one of the largest foreign direct investment commitments for digital infrastructure in India.

The announcement indicated that based on independent evaluations by Access Partnership (2025) and Google's economic modeling, the initiative is estimated to add an average of Rs 10,518 crore to GSDP each year over the first five years of operation (2028-2032), while generating around 1,88,220 direct and indirect jobs yearly in construction, data center operations, engineering, information technology, and supply chain roles.

Apart from its direct activities, Google Cloud's productivity-driven influence is anticipated to contribute Rs 9,553 crore yearly (totaling Rs 47,720 crore over a five-year period) via digital empowerment throughout the economy.

At the national scale, similar digital infrastructure centers are designed to generate up to $2.1 trillion in additional value and create 10 million jobs by 2047.

The announcement indicated that SIPB acknowledged the initiative as transformative for Andhra Pradesh's IT landscape and endorsed the establishment of Visakhapatnam as "AI City Vizag."
