Hindalco Announces Rs.21,000 Crore Smelter Expansion
Hindalco Industries Ltd, the primary metals unit of the Aditya Birla Group, today revealed a significant expansion of its aluminium activities in Odisha.
The firm announced a Rs.21,000-crore expansion for a 3.6 lakh-tonne-per-annum smelter at its Aditya Aluminium facility in Sambalpur and launched a 1.7 lakh-tonne-per-annum Flat Rolled Products (FRP) and battery-grade aluminium foil production plant with an investment of Rs.4,500 crore. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, inaugurated the projects.
These initiatives represent a significant advancement in indigenising essential raw materials for lithium-ion batteries in India, bolstering the electric mobility and energy storage framework, while improving domestic proficiency in premium aluminium products. India's first battery-grade aluminum foil plant sources materials directly from the FRP complex and is built to accommodate a lithium-ion cell production capacity of up to 100 GWh.
