The ICAI, the top organization for chartered accountants, will incorporate artificial intelligence, data analytics, and other topics into its curriculum to remain aligned with the changing technological and professional landscape.

Lakhs of students are enrolled in the chartered accountant program at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), which boasts over five lakh members.

ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D mentioned that as technology becomes more prominent, incorporating AI and data analytics into the curriculum is essential.

The institute has recently established the Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET), anticipated to conclude its recommendations, including curriculum updates, in the near future.

"We established the CRET." "It is focused on evaluating the complete curriculum, determining which syllabus and subjects require modifications and training (articleship)," Kumar stated.

At present, several topics such as AI, data analytics, ESG, and sustainability are excluded from the CA curriculum.

The newly formed CRET will examine four areas CA curriculum, hands-on training, soft skills & communication, and evaluation (exams)

"For an engineer, AI stands as an independent topic, but for us, AI is not merely a topic; without it, no chartered accountant can thrive. Whether in employment or in practice, AI is essential," Kumar, who assumed the role of President in February, stated.

In recent years, the accounting field has seen a significant change with a growing emphasis on non-financial reporting, ESG disclosures, AI, data analysis, and forensic auditing.

The CRET will focus on incorporating new technological and professional elements into the CA curriculum.
In 2023, the organization unveiled the New Program for Education and Training.

The newly formed CRET will examine four areas CA curriculum, hands-on training, soft skills & communication, and evaluation (exams).
