India adds Record 55.29 GW Non-Fossil Capacity in FY26
In 2025-26, India added a historic 55.29 GW of power capacity from non-fossil fuels, raising the total installed non-fossil capacity to 283.46 GW, while enhancing renewable energy efforts and securing third place globally.
“Non-Fossil capacity expansion in 2025-26 is 55.29 GW, marking the largest growth in any year,” stated New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday, mentioning that India has outpaced Brazil in global renewable energy standings.
Solar energy made up the majority of installations at 44.61 GW, with wind power contributing 6.05 GW over the year.
By March 31, 2026, India had a total non-fossil capacity of 283.46 GW, comprising 274.68 GW from renewable sources and 8.78 GW from nuclear energy. Renewable capacity includes 150.26 GW solar, 56.09 GW wind, 11.75 GW biomass, 5.17 GW small hydroelectric, and 51.41 GW large hydroelectric.
In 2025-26, India’s overall power generation amounted to 1,845.921 billion units, with non-fossil sources accounting for 538.97 billion units, representing 29.2percent of the total generation.
In June 2025, the nation reached 50percent of its total installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, surpassing its 2030 goal set by the Nationally Determined Contribution.
India surpassed 150 GW of total solar capacity, achieving 150.26 GW by the end of March 2026. Solar generation totaled 173.525 billion units, whereas wind generation hit 106.089 billion units
