Sachin Katti, Intel’s Chief Technology and Artificial Intelligence Officer, is leaving the chipmaker to join Sam Altman’s OpenAI — the entity behind ChatGPT.

Katti announced his transition on X (formerly Twitter), mentioning he will concentrate on enhancing OpenAI’s computing framework for artificial general intelligence (AGI), a form of AI intended to reason and learn like humans.

“Profoundly grateful for the amazing experience and chance at Intel over the last four years managing networking, edge computing, and AI,” Katti expressed in his update. His departure marks another significant exit for Intel as it seeks to improve its position in the AI chip market.

Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, shared his excitement about partnering with Katti to create and enhance the company’s AI framework — a system designed to propel OpenAI’s research and support the scaling of its upcoming models.

Earlier this year, Intel's CEO Lip-Bu Tan designated Katti as the Chief Technology and AI Officer of the company, while Tan has taken charge of the AI and Advanced Technologies Groups. Katti has been at the helm of Intel’s Network and Edge Group since early 2023, guiding the organization’s efforts in developing edge and cloud AI technologies.

Intel confirmed Katti's exit and mentioned that AI remains a key “strategic priority” for the company. The company announced that it will continue to execute its product strategy to address emerging AI needs.

Katti's departure happens while Intel focuses on rejuvenating its AI division. The chip maker has recently revised its data center strategy after falling short of its $500 million revenue goal for its Gaudi AI chips last year. Katti, a Stanford University professor and former startup founder, has been recognized for his work in wireless networks and edge machine learning — expertise that could greatly impact OpenAI's ambitious AGI goals.
