Meta has teamed up with Midjourney to acquire a license for the startup’s AI technology that generates images and videos, as announced by Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang in a Threads post . Wang states that Meta’s research groups will partner with Midjourney to integrate its technology into upcoming AI models and products.

"To guarantee that Meta can provide the highest quality products for users, it must adopt a comprehensive approach. This implies top-tier talent, an ambitious computing plan, and collaboration with the industry’s leading figures,” states Wang.

The collaboration with Midjourney might assist Meta in creating offerings that rival top-tier AI image and video models, including OpenAI’s Sora, Flux from Black Forest Lab, and Google's Veo. Last year, Meta launched its AI image generation tool, Imagine, across multiple products such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

Meta features an AI video creation tool, Movie Gen, which enables users to produce videos from prompts.
The licensing deal with Midjourney represents Meta's newest effort to advance in the AI competition. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched a recruitment drive for AI professionals, providing certain researchers with compensation packages exceeding $100 million. The social media powerhouse invested $14 billion in Scale AI and purchased the AI voice startup Play AI.

Meta has engaged in discussions with various prominent AI laboratories regarding potential acquisitions, and Zuckerberg even conversed with Elon Musk about participating in his $97 billion proposal for OpenAI (Meta eventually chose not to take part in the bid, and OpenAI rejected Musk’s offer).

Midjourney was established in 2022 and rapidly rose to prominence in the AI image generation field due to its distinctive, realistic style.

Although the specifics of Meta's agreement with Midjourney are undisclosed, the startup's CEO, David Holz, mentioned in a post on X that his company stays independent without investors; Midjourney is among the rare prominent AI model developers that have not accepted external funding. At one time, Meta discussed acquiring the startup with Midjourney, as reported by Upstarts Media.
