Microsoft has introduced Agent Mode in Excel and Word, along with Office Agent in Copilot chat, bringing what the company refers to as “vibe working” to Microsoft 365 Copilot. The functionalities aim to assist users in generating spreadsheets, documents, and presentations via iterative, prompt-driven collaboration with AI.

The launch starts with restricted accessibility. Agent Mode in Excel and Word is now accessible as of today for customers with Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses, along with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers enrolled in the Frontier program.

The Office Agent in Copilot chat is presently available to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers in the United States, functioning in English on the web.

“Agent Mode provides AI that can natively ‘talk Excel,’” stated Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Office Product Group, in a blog entry. She mentioned that it merges the complexity of Excel’s data formats with OpenAI’s newest reasoning systems, intending to make sophisticated modeling available to a broader audience beyond just specialists.

In Excel, Agent Mode allows the AI to produce outputs, confirm results, and redo tasks until the outcomes are confirmed. Microsoft claims it makes expert-level modeling accessible to everyone, enabling tasks like financial analysis, loan calculations, and household budgeting. Microsoft's assessment of the SpreadsheetBench benchmark indicated that Copilot in Excel Agent Mode reached an accuracy of 57.2percent.

In Word, Agent Mode transforms document creation into what Microsoft refers to as vibe writing. Users can give commands like refreshing reports, tidying up formats, or creating project summaries, while Copilot enhances drafts, offers suggestions, and poses clarifying inquiries.

The Office Agent in Copilot chat, driven by Anthropic models, integrates presentation and document creation within a chat-centric interface. The tool is capable of elucidating user intentions, performing research, and creating presentations or documents. Microsoft states that Office Agent fills previous voids in AI-generated slide development.

For instance, tasks could involve developing a market trends presentation, organizing a restaurant pop-up event, or assembling slides for a retirement savings strategy.

“Office Agent designs elegant, organized PowerPoint presentations and easily accessible Word files,” stated Microsoft.
