Microsoft launched a new Copilot Mode on its Edge browser that uses artificial intelligence to improve the browsing experience, as the tech giant rushes to compete with rivals launching AI-based browsers and web search features.

Copilot Mode can assist in performing tasks, categorizing browsing into topic-related queries, and comparing outcomes across all open tabs without needing users to toggle between them.

The update arrives as technology firms have launched various AI-driven online search tools. Nvidia-supported startup Perplexity AI unveiled its Comet browser earlier this month, while Reuters indicated that OpenAI is set to launch an AI browser.

Competitor Alphabet introduced "AI Mode," a search function solely based on AI, on Google earlier this year, and last week announced enhancements in user interaction with these features.

Microsoft announced that, with the new feature, users will encounter a page featuring a single input box that integrates chat, search, and web browsing functionalities. Copilot will additionally enable voice navigation for browsing in Edge.

Users will soon have the ability to allow Copilot to access further browser context, including browsing history and credentials, to perform specific tasks like booking reservations or handling errands.

According to Microsoft, Copilot can access browsing content solely when users activate it and will offer visual indicators to inform users when it is running in the background.

The feature will be free for a limited period in Copilot markets on Windows and Mac PCs, and users have the option to disable it via Edge settings.
