OpenAI Projects $2.5 Billion in Ad Revenue, $100 Billion by 2030
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, anticipates generating $2.5 billion in advertising revenue for the current year.
According to Axios, they have set ambitious targets to increase this figure to $100 billion by the year 2030.
These projections have been shared with potential investors in recent presentations, as reported by a reliable source.
The company has informed investors to anticipate a significant increase in advertising revenue, projected to reach $11 billion in 2027, $25 billion in 2028, and $53 billion by 2029. This projection is based on the assumption that OpenAI's products will attain 2.75 billion weekly users by 2030, according to the report.
In January, OpenAI announced plans to introduce advertisements within the ChatGPT platform for select users in the United States. This initiative aimed to increase overall revenue and support the escalating costs associated with the development of the company's AI technology.
The advertisements would be initially trialed with users on ChatGPT's free tier and the more affordable Go plan. Towards the end of the previous month, a representative from OpenAI reported that ChatGPT's adspilot in the United States exceeded $100 million in annual revenue within just six weeks of being introduced.
At that moment, the company had grown its clientele to encompass more than 600 advertisers. OpenAI is currently striving to increase its presence in the advertising industry, which is predominantly controlled by Alphabet's Google and Facebook parent Meta. To provide context, Google's advertising sector achieved a revenue of $294.69 billion in 2025, whereas Meta disclosed an advertising revenue of $196.18 billion in the same year.
Despite analysts' concerns about the possibility of ads in ChatGPT causing user dissatisfaction and damaging trust, OpenAI has indicated that there has been no negative effect on consumer trust metrics and that the rates of ad removal are minimal.
Additionally, OpenAI has decided to halt their Stargate project in the United Kingdom, citing the high energy costs and regulatory landscape of the country as contributing factors. In September, the American artificial intelligence startup disclosed its intentions to embark on a significant infrastructure initiative, indicating that it would be utilizing approximately 8,000 GPUs in collaboration with Nscale and Nvidia.
In the global landscape, the United Kingdom faces some of the most elevated industrial energy costs. Those who have expressed disapproval of the country's efforts to expand its AI infrastructure have highlighted the considerable expense of energy and challenges related to timely connection to the national electricity grid as major obstacles.
UK legislators are also discussing the creation of novel regulations pertaining to the utilization of copyrighted material by artificial intelligence models.
Stargate UK, upon its announcement, was regarded as a catalyst for the advancement of the nation's artificial intelligence strategy. This initiative came in the wake of OpenAI's establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding with the British government in July 2025.
