Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Inaugurate Micron Facility Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil a state-of-the-art semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand. The inauguration is purported to signify a noteworthy advancement in India's aspirations for semiconductor manufacturing as outlined in the National Semiconductor Mission.

Earlier, he emphasized the importance of embracing upcoming technologies on a large scale. He stated that his administration's emphasis on semiconductors is motivated by the pressing necessity to consider emerging technologies, which will ultimately influence the worldwide technology landscape.

During his keynote speech at the Network 18 Rising Bharat Summit, the Prime Minister emphasized the significance of his government's emphasis on advancing technological innovations, which will propel India towards becoming a prominent global tech leader in the future.

The Prime Minister mentioned the establishment of semiconductor facilities, advancements in drone technology, and the extraction of critical minerals as key components of this technological focus.

PM Modi explicitly stated that the target for achieving these advancements by 2047 is based on pragmatic considerations rather than political motivations. He is set to formally open a significant semiconductor assembly and testing plant established by Micron Technology in Sanand, Gujarat on February 28. This venture, which has received an infusion of Rs 22,516 crore, signifies a significant milestone in India's ambition to establish itself as a focal point for cutting-edge electronics production.

Situated in close proximity to Ahmedabad, this facility is being heralded as the inaugural large-scale semiconductor fabrication-linked establishment in the country. The manufacturing facility in Sanand will be responsible for the production of solid-state drives (SSDs), DRAM, and NAND memory products, all of which are crucial components for smartphones, computers, data centers, and servers.

This inauguration aligns with the increasing worldwide need for AI-driven technology, which relies on advanced memory and storage solutions. Semiconductors play a critical role in the contemporary digital economy, enabling the operation of various devices ranging from smartphones and vehicles to defense and medical equipment.

India has made significant advancements in enhancing its semiconductor ecosystem, propelled by the ambition of self-reliance. Several fabrication and design facilities have been established due to the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission, which has been accompanied by an allocation of Rs 76,000 crore.

This strategic initiative is advancing the country towards technological excellence and diminishing reliance on imports. Recent government authorizations and funding demonstrate India's positioning as a prominent international center for the production of electronics and semiconductors, highlighting its dedication to self-sufficiency and advancement.

Sanjay Mehrotra, the President and CEO of Micron Technology, emphasized the significance of memory and storage in advancing technologies. He expressed that in the current technological landscape, especially within the realm of Artificial Intelligence, memory and storage are pivotal components. The efficacy of AI systems is reliant on robust memory and storage capabilities.

He further emphasized that the demand for advanced memory solutions is on the rise due to the enhanced speed and real-time capabilities offered by Artificial Intelligence applications. The process of semiconductor manufacturing for the ATMP facility commences with sand as the raw material, from which pure silicon is derived.

The Sanand facility is tasked with transforming sophisticated DRAM and NAND wafers, produced at the company's worldwide plants, into finalized memory products

The silicon material is melted and formed into cylindrical ingots, which are subsequently sliced into thin wafers. Electronic designs are transferred onto wafers in manufacturing facilities, where successive layers are added using photolithography, resulting in the creation of transistors and memory configurations. The wafers are subsequently divided into separate chips. These chips are then transported to the ATMP facility in Sanand, where they are assembled prior to undergoing rigorous testing to evaluate their performance and reliability, which includes assessments of speed and memory capacity.

The Sanand facility is tasked with transforming sophisticated DRAM and NAND wafers, produced at the company's worldwide plants, into finalized memory products. The corporation announced that the production will meet the needs of global markets and accommodate the increasing requirement for memory and storage solutions, particularly those utilized in Artificial Intelligence technologies.
