Rapido officially introduced its independent food delivery app, Ownly, throughout Bengaluru, signaling its complete entry into India’s competitive online food delivery sector with a zero-commission approach for restaurants.

The announcement comes after a more low-key pilot that started in August of the previous year, when the app launched on the Play Store in certain areas like Koramangala, HSR Layout, and BTM Layout. The expansion introduces the service across the entire city and indicates Rapido’s aim to compete more directly with established players Swiggy and Zomato.

Ownly stated that it does not impose commissions on restaurants, opting instead to charge customers a delivery fee that accounts for logistics expenses. The platform focuses on what it refers to as price honesty, claiming that consumers ought to pay solely for food and delivery, devoid of additional platform fees or marked-up menu prices.

“Consumer habits in India are evolving swiftly.” Ordering food has become a crucial aspect of daily life throughout India, extending beyond metropolitan areas to include Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities too. At Ownly, we recognize a significant chance to create a restaurant-focused model that assists both small and large partners in addressing the changing demands of their clientele.

Rapido’s action occurs at a moment when India's food delivery sector — valued at about $8 billion each year — is predominantly dominated by Swiggy and Zomato. The two firms have established extensive restaurant networks, robust logistics fleets, and expanded into related sectors like quick commerce.

Food delivery has been a business sensitive to margins, with significant customer acquisition expenses, delivery payments, and promotional costs impacting profitability. Numerous smaller competitors over the years have found it difficult to grow.
