Tata Power Commissions 198 MW Wind Project in TN

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a prominent renewable energy firm in India and part of Tata Power Company, has effectively launched a 198 megawatt (MW) wind energy project for Tata Steel utilizing the group captive model in Karur, Tamil Nadu, marking it as one of the largest projects of its type.

The initiative includes 55 wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 3.6 MW, aimed at producing 31 million units of clean electricity each year, thus propelling Tata Steel’s decarbonization efforts and enhancing TPREL’s role in India’s renewable energy sector. The initiative compensates for 26,350 tonnes of CO2 each year, thus guaranteeing an eco-friendly supply.

A significant aspect of this project is the strategic division of the scope into several packages, each of which was managed directly by TPREL. Instead of depending on OEMs for the balance of plant (BOP), civil BOP, engineering and construction, transmission lines, 33 kV systems, and SY, the project was executed via a self-EPC model — highlighting TPREL’s robust in-house expertise, engineering proficiency, and effective implementation of a large-scale wind project.

The Karur project tackled various execution hurdles by means of careful planning and creative engineering solutions. Large turbine parts were delivered to the location with little disturbance to nearby communities, highlighting TPREL’s commitment to responsible development.

During excavation, hard rock formations were effectively handled using advanced direct-to-hole equipment, and the smooth transfer of over 516 cubic metres of concrete in a 12-hour timeframe showcased the team's excellent coordination and project management skills.

In spite of these difficulties, the project was carried out at an astonishing pace, finishing the foundation work in only 126 days and installing the wind turbine generators in 167 days.
