Wipro Enterprises is considering a possible move into semiconductor manufacturing, focusing on chip assembly and testing, according to reports.

The report indicated that the firm is assessing prospects in the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) sector, which concentrates on packaging and testing chips post-manufacturing.

Wipro Enterprises is seeking to find a global technology partner, which will be essential in deciding if the plan proceeds, the report indicated.

The possible action arises as various Indian conglomerates enhance their role in the semiconductor supply chain due to the nation's efforts to build local chip production capabilities.

For example, HCL Group has collaborated with Foxconn to establish a Rs.3,700-crore OSAT facility in Uttar Pradesh.

Simultaneously, the Tata Group is constructing a Rs.27,000-crore plant for semiconductor assembly and testing in Assam.

Likewise, the Murugappa Group, via CG Semi, has launched the initial unit of a Rs. 7,600-crore OSAT initiative in Sanand, Gujarat, in collaboration with Renesas Electronics and Stars Microelectronics.

Investment choices in the sector might hinge on the forthcoming stage of the government's semiconductor incentive scheme under India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, particularly since various chip manufacturing projects are already in progress in the nation.

In July of the previous year, the company introduced Wipro Electronic Materials as a new sector within WIN. Earlier this year, the department obtained authorization from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology through the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme to allocate Rs. 500 crore for a copper-clad laminate production plant in Bengaluru.
