Aditya Birla Group Enters Wires & Cables with Rs. 1,800 Crore Bet

The Aditya Birla group revealed the introduction of its Ultravolt wires and cables division. Supported by an investment of Rs.1,800 crore, Ultravolt will become the second-biggest competitor in the wires sector by capacity, according to reports.

Operating under UltraTech Cement, the group’s leading company, Ultravolt seeks to establish a significant national brand and strives to be among the top two competitors in five years.

UltraTech’s foray into the wires and cables sector broadens its involvement in the construction value chain, which already includes grey cement, ready-mix concrete, building products, and white cement, aligning with its articulated building solutions strategy. It also allows UltraTech to engage more thoroughly in the expanding opportunities related to home construction, infrastructure, and electrification, the group mentioned.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, the chairman of the $72 billion Aditya Birla group, stated: “Wires and cables are becoming vital to India's upcoming phase of growth. They occupy the convergence of three major trends in the Indian economy — urbanization, electrification, and digitization."

He mentioned, “In recent years, the successful establishment of new businesses has become an integral aspect of the group’s identity and a key source of distinction for the group. I more frequently view the Aditya Birla group as offering the foundation and driving force for new ventures.

Ultravolt represents the group's fourth new venture in the past three years, succeeding its introductions in paints (Birla Opus), B2B e-commerce (Birla Pivot), and jewellery retail (Indriya), with Shah Rukh Khan as the brand ambassador.

Birla stated that the group's growth into new sectors is motivated by two reasons: robust structural advantages promoting long-term category expansion and the chance to innovate in the market by utilizing its brand, capital, scale, and extensive ecosystem knowledge. He stated that the wires and cables market fulfills these criteria, as it is a well-established and expanding sector with distinct structural growth factors.

Upon launch, Ultravolt will provide an extensive selection of wires, cables, and conduits, with intentions to gradually broaden its offerings to cover the entire kilovolt (kV) spectrum, specialized cable uses, and a wider variety of electrical accessories.
