OpenAI revealed two open-weight reasoning models that match the performance of its o-series, while Amazon stated that the new models would be accessible on AWS. This is the initial occasion that AWS will provide OpenAI models, the company told TechCrunch. They will be offered as a model option within Amazon AI services like Bedrock and SageMaker AI.

Although anyone can access the models through Hugging Face, Amazon is providing them with the complete awareness and consent of OpenAI, as stated by Dmitry Pimenov, the product lead for the model creator, in the announcement. A representative characterized the offering as akin to Amazon's release of the open model DeepSeek-R1 earlier this year.

This is a substantial competitive strategy for both firms. For AWS, it ultimately places the cloud behemoth alongside the largest model creator, OpenAI.

So far, AWS has primarily gained recognition as a significant provider and a financial supporter of Anthropic’s Claude, a leading competitor of OpenAI. AWS provides Claude, alongside models from developers like Cohere, DeepSeek, Meta, and Mistral, in addition to its own in-house creations within its AI services.

Specifically, Bedrock enables AWS clients to create and manage generative AI applications utilizing models they prefer. In contrast, SageMaker enables AWS clients to train or create their own AI models primarily for analytical purposes.

Even though Microsoft, AWS's main competitor, has not controlled OpenAI models since January, Azure remains OpenAI's most important cloud collaborator to date. OpenAI also revealed that Microsoft is providing versions of these two new models, optimized for Windows devices as well.

Observing Microsoft capture a growing share of cloud business with OpenAI has been a visible source of discomfort for Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Only a week ago, during Amazon's quarterly earnings call, Jassy faced a barrage of inquiries from Wall Street analysts regarding the company's diminishing position in AI against rivals, especially Microsoft.
