Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates Lithium-ion Battery Plant in Sohna

Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated TDK Corporation’s Advanced Technologies Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Battery Manufacturing Plant at Sohna, Haryana.

Emphasizing it as a significant milestone in India’s electronics pathway, the Minister stated, “This is a crucial achievement for us as we realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat."

Camera modules, PCB assemblies, semiconductors, and batteries—every part will be produced in our nation in the upcoming years. The introduction of such sophisticated technology in India marks a significant achievement for our independence in electronics.

He mentioned that the initial made-in-India chips were showcased to the Prime Minister at Semicon India 2025. The introduction of this facility will enable the domestic production of Li-ion batteries for mobile phones, wearables, hearables like watches, earbuds, AirPods, and laptops.

The advanced facility will manufacture approximately 20 crore (200 million) battery packs annually, fulfilling nearly 40 percent of India's yearly need for 50 crore packs. With significant potential for growth, the facility is set to enhance the nation’s electronics manufacturing framework.

Shri Vaishnaw emphasized that the factory has been set up under the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) Scheme by the Government of India. Emphasizing job opportunities, Vaishnaw mentioned that the facility will create direct employment for approximately 5,000 individuals, with careful training already provided at the AT Bawal site.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the Haryana government for its assistance in enabling the setup of electronics manufacturing plants in the state.
