Semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML has begun its operations in India and aims to recruit 20-30 young engineering graduates initially to fulfill its needs, according to reports.

While discussing at SEMICON India 2026, ASML's Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Support, Lin Kiat Yap, informed that the firm’s expansion strategy relies on the performance of Tata Electronics' chip division in India and India's aspirations to advance in the semiconductor sector.

In response to a question about when his firm will launch operations in India and expand, Yap stated, "At this moment," and continued, "We are likely to begin with 20-30 employees."

"We will observe how quickly it expands. It ultimately relies on India's aspirations, and it truly hinges on Tata's ambitions. ASML offers cutting-edge lithography technology. that facilitates the creation of circuits on silicon wafers. It essentially lays the groundwork for transforming a silicon wafer into a functioning element," Yap says.

The firm holds a monopoly on advanced lithography technology, and no sophisticated chip globally can be produced without its machinery.

Yap mentioned that many ASML clients are expanding operations within their own nation.

"I believe it's beneficial that Tata is initiating the initial stages of cultivating the ecosystem. I believe it is crucial to keep expanding the ecosystem by introducing a second participant and a third as well. Our goal is to ensure Tata's success, as I believe that when people observe Tata thriving, it will encourage them to devote more time and attention to India and recognize potential opportunities," Yap stated.

At the event, ASML's Chief Strategic Sourcing and Procurement Officer, Allan Wayne, announced that Tata Electronics is the inaugural customer in India to operate a 300-millimeter semiconductor fab with a monthly production capacity of 50,000 wafers.

"If we plan to expand this, we must be capable of constructing numerous fabs here. This is the reason we have strong confidence in the current policies from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his team regarding the ecosystem, as well as the remarkable talent present in India," he stated.

Wayne stated that ASML enters a territory not just to assist customers but also to utilize talent.
