FedEx, IIT Madras Complete Bengaluru Drone Delivery Trial

FedEx, together with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), has accomplished India’s initial intra-city drone delivery trials in Bengaluru, representing a major advancement in future urban logistics, as per reports.

The pilot initiative, carried out at the FedEx SMART Centre at IIT Madras, evaluated drone-assisted mid-mile delivery services from Electronic City Phase II to a site close to Kempegowda International Airport. The experiment aimed to assess how aerial logistics could enhance delivery efficiency in crowded urban areas.

According to the report, the drone path spanned roughly 39–42 km in the air, substituting a 53 km road trip that usually exceeds an hour because of traffic delays. The drone finished the delivery in almost 21 minutes, showcasing the capability for much quicker transportation of items via aerial routes in urban areas.

The project additionally aimed at assessing the practicality of incorporating drones into current supply chain frameworks while managing intricate urban airspace, including controlled airport areas. The actions were performed with permissions from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), ensuring adherence to safety and aviation regulations.
