Salesforce announced that it plans to acquire defence technology company Rune Technologies to strengthen its Missionforce division, which provides software solutions to the US military and government agencies.

Rune Technologies develops artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software designed to help military personnel forecast supply requirements, manage resource allocation and identify optimal dispatch locations. Its technology is particularly useful in areas with limited or no internet connectivity, enabling military operations to maintain logistical coordination in challenging environments.

According to Salesforce, Rune’s technology is already being used by the US Army and the US Marine Corps. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Missionforce’s capabilities by integrating advanced AI-driven logistics and supply chain management solutions into its defence-focused offerings.

Salesforce also highlighted the growing momentum of its Missionforce division. One year after its launch, the company’s defence business recorded 80% year-on-year growth, securing customers across all six branches of the US military.

The planned acquisition comes as Salesforce continues to expand its artificial intelligence portfolio through strategic deals. The company has been increasing investments in AI amid concerns among investors that the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence could reduce demand for traditional enterprise software.

By bringing Rune Technologies into Missionforce, Salesforce aims to offer more advanced AI-powered tools to military organisations, particularly for improving logistics, resource planning and operational efficiency in complex environments

Last week, Salesforce agreed to acquire AI marketing software company Braze in a deal valued at approximately $5.66 billion. Earlier this year, it completed a $3.6 billion agreement involving AI agent platform Fin. The company also agreed to an $8 billion acquisition of data management firm Informatica last year.

The latest move reflects Salesforce’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the growing AI market while expanding its presence in the defence and government technology sectors.
