As the swift development of infrastructure becomes central in the intense AI competition among tech giants, Google is appointing one of its experienced leaders to a new position managing the intricate strategy, based on an internal memo examined by Semafor.

Amin Vahdat, who transitioned from academia to Google around 15 years ago, will be appointed as chief technologist for AI infrastructure, as stated in the memo, and will be among the 15 to 20 individuals reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.

Google predicts it will have invested over $90 billion in capital expenditures by the end of 2025, with the majority allocated to the segment of the company that Vahdat will now manage.

"This shift identifies AI Infrastructure as a primary emphasis for the company," stated Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian in the Wednesday memo praising Vahdat.

Google has been thriving recently, gaining significant acclaim for its newest Gemini 3 AI model, which has alarmed even OpenAI; its CEO recently labeled Google’s rise as a crisis for the developer of ChatGPT.

However, Google’s edge over OpenAI lies not only in its AI research strengths but also in its capacity to efficiently deliver AI-powered products to a vast user audience.

This capability arises from a ten-year effort focused on developing custom AI chips known as Tensor Processing Units, alongside all the software and tools created to enhance performance at the lowest possible expense.

The Google DeepMind group collaborates with the TPU team to enhance chips for Gemini's functions, and the company has developed everything from optical circuit switches to liquid cooling in a vertically integrated technology and software framework.
