According to reports, Alphabet's Google sign the European Union's code of practice which aims to help companies comply with the bloc's landmark artificial intelligence rules.

The voluntary code of practice, created by 13 independent experts, seeks to offer legal clarity to signatories regarding compliance with the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), including providing summaries of the training content used for their general-purpose AI models and adhering to EU copyright regulations.

Kent Walker, Alphabet's chief legal officer, states, "We aim to ensure that this code, when implemented, enhances access for European citizens and businesses to high-quality, secure AI tools as they emerge."

"Specifically, deviations from EU copyright regulations, actions that delay approvals, or demands that reveal trade secrets may hinder European model development and implementation, negatively impacting Europe's competitiveness," Walker states.

Microsoft is expected to sign the code, as stated by its president, Brad Smith, to Reuters earlier this month, whereas Meta Platforms opted not to, referencing the legal uncertainties for model creators.

The European Union implemented regulations for artificial intelligence usage in an effort to establish a possible worldwide standard for a technology prevalent in both commerce and daily life, primarily led by the United States and China.

Last week, US tech giant Meta announced it will not sign, criticizing the regulations for hindering innovation. The drafting process of the Code has faced criticism from rights holders, who are concerned it may infringe on copyright regulations.

Google stated in its announcement that it is dedicated to collaborating with the AI Office to guarantee that the Code is proportionate and responsive to the fast and dynamic development of AI

The Commission will publish a list of the signatories on 1 August.
