According to Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, India ranks alongside the United States and China in spearheading research and development (R&D) for the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, as the nation is addressing all five layers of AI architecture concurrently.

Vaishnaw answered a question posed by a panel that referred to a remark made by International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Kristalina Georgieva.

Georgieva stated that the US and China belonged to one category regarding AI development, while India and other nations were classified in a second category.

Vaishnaw stated that India was placed third in Stanford’s rankings for AI preparedness and penetration, as well as second in the rankings for AI talent base.

During a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Vaishnaw mentioned that India is focusing on the applications of AI, AI models, the chips that support these models, the data centers that house them, and the energy required for the AI infrastructure.

"At the application layer, we are likely to be the largest provider of services globally." Visit a company, grasp their operations and processes, then deliver that service through AI solutions.

According to Vaishnaw, this will be the most significant determinant of AI's success or effective implementation.

Ashwini says, “Our focus is very much on ensuring that AI diffusion happens in a very big way.”

Returns on investment in different AI layers will stem from the application layer, rather than from advanced large language models (LLMs) created by firms and nations. According to Ashwini, almost 95 percent of the global tasks today can be effectively accomplished with models that operate on 20 billion or 50 billion parameters.

He added that India already has a bouquet of such AI models being deployed across multiple sectors to increase productivity, efficiency, and effective use of technology.
