The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has finalized agreements totaling Rs 975 crore with two Indian companies for the acquisition of trawl assembly systems for T-72 and T-90 tanks, intended to enhance the Army’s land mine-clearing and mobility abilities.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced that the contracts have been granted to Bharat Earth Movers Limited and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt Ltd (EPHL) in a media release.

The TRAWL Assembly designed for T-72/T-90 Tanks is essential equipment created by DRDO that will improve the Indian Army's ability to breach minefields.

As per reports, it would create more capacity for establishing Vehicle Safe Lanes amid minefields with anti-tank mines featuring proximity magnetic fuses, thereby improving the operational efficiency of the Indian Army.

EPHL has confirmed through a post on X that it has obtained a Rs 385 crore deal for 70 trawl assembly sets within the ministry's procurement initiative.

The Armoured Corps of the Indian Army will utilize the assembly system for their main battle tanks T-72 (Ajeya) and T-90 (Bhishma).

It is a specialized system for clearing mines, attached to the front of the tank, utilized in a layered method to identify and eliminate landmines by either detonating or displacing them, ensuring secure movement for advancing forces. It can endure direct explosions below without jeopardizing the tank or its crew.

The procurement is categorized under Buy (Indian–Indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured), strengthening the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence capital purchases.
