India and Russia are set to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, advanced computing, quantum technology, semiconductor research and manufacturing, as both countries prepare for key engagements around the BRICS Summit 2026. The discussions indicate a broader shift in bilateral ties from traditional trade towards technology collaboration, industrial partnerships and local manufacturing.

Indian technology is expected to be on display for the industrial companies of Russia with an eye on manufacturing possibilities. Firms operating in areas including aviation, energy, nuclear technology, mining and heavy industry are expected to seek deeper participation in India's manufacturing ecosystem, including opportunities for technology transfer, joint industrial projects and local production.

The discussions will coincide with Innoprom. India, a joint industrial exposition scheduled for September 9–11. The event is expected to bring together Russian companies, Indian government representatives and industry stakeholders to identify opportunities connected to India's manufacturing expansion and the Make in India initiative.

The exposition will cover aviation, mining, energy, nuclear power, digital technology and additive manufacturing. Artificial intelligence is also expected to feature among the emerging areas being considered for future cooperation.

A major engagement is scheduled for September 10, when Anton Alikhanov, Russia's Minister of Industry and Trade, and Piyush Goyal, India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, are expected to participate in the main plenary session. The discussions will focus on bilateral trade, investment, market access and joint industrial projects, according to event organisers.

The meetings between India and Russia are occurring at a time when both countries are looking to expand business relations beyond trade. In India, technology transfer and domestic manufacturing can facilitate the building of local capacity and reinforce supply chains and production in critical sectors.

Innoprom. India is also expected to facilitate discussions on regional aviation, digital technology, critical minerals, trade infrastructure and additive manufacturing. While the potential for new manufacturing partnerships is significant, the scale of investments and technology-transfer agreements has not yet been determined.

India is simultaneously using its BRICS chairmanship to advance cooperation in emerging technologies. According to officials cited by The Economic Times, India aims to complete several multilateral initiatives involving the expanded 11-member BRICS grouping.

One of the proposed initiatives is the Global Research Advanced Infrastructure Network (GRAIN). The network should enable researchers in the BRICS countries to gain access to a high-performance computing infrastructure and supercomputing resources.

India is expected to encourage increased cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and semiconductors. These priorities reflect the growing importance of shared technology infrastructure, advanced research capabilities and resilient technology supply chains.
