
India to Launch its First Domestically Produced Chip Soon: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw states that India will soon see the launch of its first domestically produced chip with six semiconductor facilities which currently being built in Gujarat, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking on the ‘Next-Gen Mobility for a Next-Gen City’ initiative here, the IT Minister stated, “Currently, six semiconductor facilities are being built in our nation, and shortly we will witness the initial made in India chip produced in these plants.”
The minister states, “AI is influencing our world today. The vision of our Prime Minister is to democratize technology. It ought to be open to everyone. It mustn't be confined to just a handful. It must be accessible to everyone. For this reason, we have launched the India AI mission, providing 34,000 GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) as a shared computing resource for all our innovators.”
“The cost of these GPUs is slightly under $ 1 for each hour. And this is the least expensive shared computer resource globally,” the Minister stated.

Of the five semiconductor plants, four are located in Gujarat: Tata Electronics–PSMC Semiconductor fab, CG Power–Renesas–Stars Microelectronics ATMP facility, Micron Technology’s ATMP facility, and Kaynes Semicon ATMP facility, while the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT) Unit is situated in Assam.
