Micron Plans $ 24 Billion Memory Chipmaking Plant in Singapore
U.S. memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology revealed a $24-billion investment strategy to establish a new memory chip production plant in Singapore, as it strives to increase output amid a severe global shortage.
The report, originally shared by Reuters, arrives during a rush in the industry to develop AI infrastructure, causing sectors like consumer electronics and AI service providers to contend with a significant shortage of various memory chips.
Micron announced that its new investment to construct a state-of-the-art wafer fabrication facility in the coming decade will assist in fulfilling the increasing market demand for NAND memory chips, driven by the surge of AI and data-focused applications.
According to reports, wafer production is expected to commence in the latter half of 2028 within a cleanroom area covering over 700,000 square feet (65,000 sq m).
Micron manufactures 98percent of its flash memory chips in Singapore, where it is also constructing a $7-billion advanced packaging facility for high bandwidth memory (HBM), utilized in artificial intelligence chips, set to commence production in 2027.
