Microsoft Launches in-house AI models

Microsoft has launched its inaugural completely in-house AI models: MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview, signifying a significant advancement in its AI initiative.
MAI-Voice-1, created for generating natural speech, is currently driving the functionalities of Copilot Daily and Podcasts, whereas MAI-1-preview, a text-centric foundational model trained end-to-end, is open for public testing on LMArena and will shortly be introduced in specific Copilot applications.
Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft's AI division, disclosed in a Semafor interview that the company’s latest models were created with an emphasis on efficiency and affordability. MAI-Voice-1, its model for generating natural speech, operates using only a single GPU, while MAI-1-preview, a foundational model based on text, was trained on roughly 15,000 Nvidia H-100 GPUs. This is much lower than competitors such as xAI’s Grok, which needed over 100,000 GPUs. Suleyman highlighted that the key to effective model training is in choosing the appropriate data and steering clear of unnecessary compute cycles on unrelated tokens.

At present, Microsoft Copilot still depends mostly on OpenAI’s GPT technology. However, the introduction of in-house models underscores Microsoft’s goal to lessen its dependence on OpenAI and establish itself as a standalone competitor in the AI industry. Although it has made significant investments in OpenAI, the company recognizes the lasting importance of possessing its own core technology. Suleyman recognized that closing the gap with established competitors will require time, yet he presented a solid “five-year plan” supported by regular quarterly funding.
