Microsoft would no longer update WordPad and will remove the word processor from a future generation of Windows over 30 years after it was first released, according to reports.

Microsoft will instead recommend Word, its premium word processor that has always been significantly more sophisticated than WordPad, which has been included with Windows since 1995.

WordPad is no longer updated and will be discontinued in a future Windows edition. For rich text documents such as.doc and.rtf, we recommend Microsoft Word, and for simple text documents such as.txt, we prefer Windows Notepad.

The discontinuation of WordPad comes just one day after Microsoft announced that Notepad would be upgraded with features such as autosave and tab retraction. In 2018, the Windows Notepad software in Windows 11 was upgraded for the first time in years, with tabs added.

Following iOS and Android, Microsoft's digital assistant Cortana app on Windows 11 would be discontinued. While Cortana as a separate program in Windows is no longer supported, support for Cortana in Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams Rooms will cease in the autumn of 2023
