Nvidia Acquires AI Software Provider SchedMD
Nvidia announced it has taken over AI software company SchedMD, as the chipmaker intensifies its focus on open-source technology and boosts investments in the artificial intelligence sector to combat increasing competition.
The chip manufacturer established its reputation for fast chips, but it additionally provides various AI models, including physics simulations and autonomous vehicles, as open-source software available for researchers and companies.
Its exclusive CUDA software, a benchmark for many developers, serves as a significant selling factor for its chips, positioning software as essential for sustaining its leadership in the AI sector.
SchedMD offers software designed for scheduling substantial computing tasks that can utilize a significant portion of a data center's server resources.
The technology, known as Slurm, is open source, allowing developers and companies to use it at no cost, while the firm provides engineering and maintenance support for a fee.
The financial details of the agreement were not revealed. Nvidia announced that it would keep providing SchedMD's software as open-source.

SchedMD was established in 2010 by Slurm software creators Morris "Moe" Jette and Danny Auble in Livermore, California, and the firm currently has 40 employees, as stated on its website.
Its clients include the cloud infrastructure company CoreWeave and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, among others.
