Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon Eye Up to $60B Investment in OpenAI
Sam Altman-led OpenAI is negotiating to secure approximately $60 billion in funding from Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon, according to reports.
Nvidia, an existing investor whose chips power OpenAI's AI models, is in talks to invest up to $30 billion, as per reports.
Microsoft, a longstanding backer with exclusive rights to sell OpenAI models to cloud customers, is in talks to invest less than $10 billion.
Amazon, which would be a new investor, is also in talks to invest significantly more than $10 billion, potentially even more than $20 billion, reports indicate.
This is the latest in multiple reports of the ChatGPT-maker raising big funds. Reports emerged last week about Altman raising about $50 billion from sovereign funds in the Middle East at a valuation of $750-830 billion.
Altman recently visited the region, where he spoke with investors, including some of the leading state-backed funds in Abu Dhabi, as per reports.
OpenAI has raised billions of dollars in recent years to help finance the immense cost of chips, data centers and talent to build new artificial intelligence systems and support wider adoption of the technology. The startup, which is not yet profitable, has committed to spend more than $1.4 trillion on AI infrastructure in the coming years.
The latest funding talks come as OpenAI continues to scale its operations and improve its AI systems, with the demand for advanced machine learning models soaring. The partnership with Nvidia is critical, given the company's dominance in the hardware space, which powers OpenAI's computational-heavy models.
Microsoft’s contribution strengthens its longstanding collaboration, as the tech giant integrates OpenAI’s technology into its suite of products, including Azure and Office tools.
