Qualcomm, Microsoft are Inventing Chips for Metaverse Apps

Qualcomm Inc., and Microsoft Corp., are working in tandem to invent custom chips capable of controlling lightweight augmented reality (AR) glasses for metaverse apps used by consumers as well as businesses.

The former’s chief executive, Cristiano Amon, says that both companies will fuse custom chips with a software that enables developers to create virtual worlds that support work and play.

Additionally, Amon claims that even upcoming devices from this collaboration will rely on Microsoft’s software, Mesh, that will help produce a realistic likeness of users into another user’s headset to make it appear as though both are present in the same environment.

Moreover, other future hardware will bank on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces, known for enabling basic AR functions like mapping out physical spaces that allows the overlaying of physical objects. The other is hand-tracking that gives power to the user to manipulate digital objects with hand gestures.

Although the collaboration was announced at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 22, it still remains unclear about when these chips and headsets will make it to the stores.
