
Qualcomm to Localize the Production of Automotive Modules in India

Qualcomm, a leading chip company based in the US, is localizing the production of automotive modules in India and assisting its top ecosystem partners with their plans to shift manufacturing to the country, according to reports.
Nakul Duggal, group general manager for automotive, industrial, and embedded IoT at Qualcomm Technologies, stated to PTI that the firm is making significant investments in India to assist domestic automotive firms.
“We construct numerous modules. Those modules are usually manufactured in Taiwan, China, or Korea, but we are currently focusing on localizing this in India. We collaborate with our Tier 1 ecosystem, ensuring that as they shift their manufacturing to India, we support them," Nakul adds.
Group General Manager for Automotive, Industrial, and Embedded IoT at Qualcomm Technologies, stated to PTI that the firm is making significant investments in India to support.
Nakul stated that Qualcomm is a fabless firm, meaning it designs chips but does not produce them.
"For us, it's truly about generating possibilities in our supply chain to enable that (manufacturing)," Nakul adds.
Qualcomm employs about 22,000 people in India, constituting 60 percent of its staff.
Duggal mentioned that the firm has a local team to assist domestic automobile producers.

Qualcomm has been optimistic about chipsets for vehicles, particularly electric cars. The firm has collaborated with all leading car OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), such as Tata Motors, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Hyundai, to supply them with chipsets for upgrading vehicles.
It features the Snapdragon Elite chipset platform for telematics, infotainment, and driver support, incorporating ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

He mentioned that India has a significant domestic presence that includes both local and international automakers producing within the country.
"There is a significant necessity for creating products that address the requirements of the Indian area. Instead of creating a product designed for a worldwide audience, develop a product intended for a local market. This requires an OEM to possess engineering skills and creative abilities to consider the demands of the local area, and we are beginning to observe this occurring," Nakul adds stated.
