Samsung Electronics Set to Manufacture Laptops in Noida Facility

According to various sources, Samsung Electronics, the South Korean electronics giant, will start manufacturing laptops in India at its Noida plant. The report says that the Noida plant is currently used for making phones, but it has been made bigger to have a new laptop making unit that can make 60,000 to 70,000 units in a year.

The Noida plant, where Samsung makes its largest number of mobile phones, will require an investment of about Rs 100-200 crore to create new Laptop manufacturing lines.

It is no secret that the that global hardware companies are talking with more Indian companies that have applied for the new production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. They want to work together to make notebooks, desktops, and servers in India. This will help the government's aim of making 70 percent of these semiconductor products locally in three years.

People who work in the industry say that Asus is working with Flextronics, a US company that has applied for the new PLI scheme. HP gets its products made by the contract manufacturer.

Till June 2023, the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing has attracted investments of Rs 6887 crore, already breaching the ministry’s target of Rs 5,488 crore till the end of FY24


Similarly, Taiwan-based Acer stated that it is in the advanced stages of expanding its manufacturing presence in the country. According to reports, HP and Lenovo are also in talks with Dixon about increasing local production. Notably, both firms already have manufacturing operations in India.

Till June 2023, the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing has attracted investments of Rs 6887 crore, already breaching the ministry’s target of Rs 5,488 crore till the end of FY24.

The scheme has also generated production of over Rs 3.3 lakh crore and employment of around 62,000. The exports due to the scheme have reached Rs 1.56 lakh crore till June 23, while the target is over Rs 2.63 lakh crore by FY24. The scheme was launched in 2021 to promote large-scale electronics manufacturing in India.
