Twitter Calls BBC as State-Affiliated Organization

Twitter changed its mind and now refers to the BBC, which is primarily supported by British households paying a license fee, as being state-affiliated and government funded after causing a stir for calling the US radio network NPR state-affiliated media.

After the network complained that the label state-affiliated was derogatory and misleading, this has happened.

Last week, Twitter discreetly changed the way it refers to National Public Radio, which is situated in Washington.

Additionally, Twitter compared NPR to government-run outlets in China and Russia. NPR ceased tweeting in protest. NPR's main account, which has more than 8.8 million followers, urged users to find us anywhere else you read the news in its modified Twitter bio.

NPR CEO John Lansing responded to the remarks by stating that the choice made by Twitter was inappropriate, and the radio's account has since been silent.

According to the NPR website, the majority of its funding comes from dues paid by member stations around the country, with additional support coming from private donations and public funds.

The State-affiliated criterion was not present on other NPR accounts, such as its music and politics handles, and those accounts have continued to tweet, according to AFP.

This happened only a few days after Twitter removed The New York Times' verified status. Like NPR, The New York Times is frequently accused of left-leaning bias, mostly by US conservatives.

Twitter policy states that the decisions will deamplify tweets from both companies, reducing their reach on a platform that continues to be a crucial channel for celebrities, public figures, and media organizations.

Elon Musk has long shown his abiding contempt for the media, and in recent weeks he added an automatic poop emoji response to emails submitted to the website's main press address.

On the other hand, NPR reported on Thursday that Musk had hinted in a series of emails that the relabeling might not have been 'correct' and that Twitter will further investigate the situation.

According to the NPR website, the majority of its funding comes from dues paid by member stations around the country, with additional support coming from private donations and public funds.
