AI has become an indispensable part of our lives and different nations have woken up to this fact. As a consequence, we see countries across the globe moving towards developing its ability to produce and control its own AI. Called ‘AI Sovereignty’, it encompasses infrastructure, data, workforce, and foundational models required for a independent digital ecosystem.

The global ‘sovereign AI’ movement is indicative of how countries today view AI as a strategic asset rather than just a ‘nice to have’ tool. Countries are working towards gaining control over key AI components in order to avoid dependence on foreign technology, which could pose risks such as an “AI embargo” during crises. Ensuring domestic control is seen as critical for national security, economic growth, and data protection.

In the current edition we take a closer look at how different nations across the globe are working towards building an independent AI ecosystem.

India recently hosted the much talked about India AI Impact Summit, which underscores the zeal towards attaining AI sovereignty. The nation’s IndiaAI Mission focuses on building a self-reliant ecosystem through local models, datasets, GPU infrastructure, and governance frameworks.

On the same lines we see Canada’s recent $2 billion investment in a three-part strategy to expand compute capacity, support innovation, and ensure access to AI resources. On the other hand we see Japan advancing with its powerful ABCI 3.0 supercomputer, while France emphasizes secure “trusted cloud” systems to maintain data sovereignty. The UAE is also prioritizing secure data infrastructure and ethical AI governance.

Despite these efforts, reliance on global supply chains has made achieving full AI independence a distant dream for said countries.

Two main approaches exist: adapting foreign AI systems with local controls or building domestic ecosystems. The world is thus moving toward a fragmented AI landscape shaped by U.S. and Chinese influence, with countries pursuing selective, “layered sovereignty” based on their capabilities.

Only time will tell which nation races ahead in this race and who lags behind. The only thing we know now is that several nations have left the starting mark and are moving towards achieving AI sovereignty.
