Anthropic Acquires Startup Coefficient Bio

Reports indicate that Anthropic has allegedly bought AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio in a transaction estimated at approximately $400 million, according to a report from The Information.

This occurs as AI companies have been diversifying into industry-specific AI solutions, particularly in healthcare and life sciences.

The report states that the specialized, albeit small, team at Coefficient Bio will integrate into Anthropic's healthcare division after the acquisition. Even though it was recently established, the startup has developed a platform to help artificial intelligence manage intricate biotech processes like drug discovery, research planning, and regulatory strategy formulation.

The purchase follows Anthropic’s announcement to broaden its AI functionalities from general-use tools to specialized applications.

In recent months, the company has been diligently enhancing its AI assistant Claude by introducing features designed specifically for scientific and medical applications. This encompasses connections with platforms such as Benchling and BioRender, along with tools for composing clinical protocols and regulatory paperwork.

In the meantime, Anthropic unintentionally disclosed the source code for Claude Code via a wrongly set up npm package. The leak disclosed 512,000 lines of code, featuring concealed functionalities like KAIROS (autonomous mode) and Undercover Mode.
