Anthropic Appoints Amlan Mohanty as India Policy Head
Anthropic has selected Amlan Mohanty as the leader of policy and external affairs for India, signifying a move to enhance its regulatory footprint in the nation.
In a public announcement, Mohanty expressed his excitement about joining the company and emphasized its commitment to developing artificial intelligence with a priority on safety. He mentioned that his initial experience within the organization strengthened his conviction that the technology could greatly enhance lives, while emphasizing that risks should be managed carefully.
"India plays a crucial role in the future of AI – its scale, diversity, and potential for influence are unparalleled, and successful initiatives in this region can be adapted globally." "I'm eager to influence Anthropic's initial footprint in India and establish reliable collaborations with government, industry, and civil society," he stated.
Prior to joining Anthropic, Mohanty occupied several policy and research positions at various institutions. He held the position of Associate Fellow at the Centre for Responsible AI, focusing on research and advisory concerning AI safety and governance. He served as a Non-Resident Fellow at NITI Aayog, providing guidance to the Indian government on policies related to emerging technologies.

At Carnegie India, he served as a Fellow, directing the AI initiative, which encompassed research, writing, and organizing policy discussions.
Earlier in his career, he served as a public policy advisor at Google from 2018 to 2022.

The appointment occurs as international artificial intelligence firms sharpen their attention on India as a key market for both implementation and policy. In 2024, OpenAI named Pragya Mishra as its head of public policy for India, indicating a comparable effort by major AI companies to connect with regulators in the nation.
