A labor-back request for an artificial intelligence (AI ) transparency report on how Apple uses it in its business, including its ethical guidelines around it, was voted down by iPhone maker’s shareholders.

Additionally, the shareholders also turned down equal employment opportunities, civil liberties, racial and gender pay gaps and human rights. However, the board plate and company’s pension plan was approved.

The request was submitted by the AFL-CIO, the biggest labor union federation of America, which is also known to proposingAI measures to other technology companies as well.

The proposal requested the iPhone maker to unveil ethical guidelines followed when incorporating AI. The measure voiced that AI gives rise to a number of social policy issues, which indicates that the technology is prone to resulting in biased decision against employees or causing disruptions in the privacy of customers. Further it warned about automation being responsible for the layoffs that have been happening recently.

The timing of this proposal came when Apple is increasingly shedding focus into generative AI.

In its supporting statement in Apple's proxy materials, the AFL-CIO wrote that "AI systems should not be trained on copyrighted works, or the voices, likenesses and performances of professional performers, without transparency, consent and compensation to creators and rights holders."

The proposal was read by the iPhone maker’s retail store employee, whom he and his colleagues were concerned about the company’s expansion into AI.

Apple dismissed the measure believing that it could leave it vulnerable in its strategy while it competes with its rivals in the fast-paced AI domain.

Additionally, the shareholders also turned down equal employment opportunities, civil liberties, racial and gender pay gaps and human rights. However, the board plate and company’s pension plan was approved.

Compared to other tech companies, the iPhone maker has been tight-lipped regarding its plans for generative AI, except that it revealed its plans for the technology later this year.

Behind the curtains, the tech giants has been making contributions to its software using generative AI, and its senior vice president, Craig Federighi, was reportedly seen instructing his team to develop AI features as many as they could for the year’s operating system updates.
