An EU antitrust fine of 500 million euros ($543 million) will be slammed on tech giant Apple next week for preventing Spotify along with other music streaming companies from announcing options outside its App Store for users.

This action by the tech giant was tagged as ‘anti-steering obligations’ that consists of unfair trading conditions.

Additionally it was considered as a new argument in an antitrust case, which was used by Meta Platforms, as well, for a different issue.

The fine is scheduled to be sent to Apple on March 5th, but it is certain whether the same amount and final timing will remain unchanged as it is dealt by Margrethe Vestager, EU’s antitrust chief.

On the other hand, the EU plans to ban Apple from doing these actions and the tech giant cannot avoid the command given the new Digital Markets Act (DMA) under EU technical rules, which also includes six other companies to comply.

Although Google’s fines, which measure billions of euros from three EU antitrust cases over the years, proved insignificant in Apple’s fine which serves as a warning. Therefore, it comes as highly significant financial penalties slammed by the EU on big tech companies.

The commission is also considering Apple's move in removing home screen web apps for users in the European region, which the tech giant said last was that it will comply with the DMA.

As a result of the act, these tech giants must abide by stricter regulations and permit competitors to disclose information about their offerings.

It is a first for Apple to be fined for antitrust infringement. Previously in 2020, it was held accountable for anti-competitive behavior with a fine of 1.1 billion euros, but after an appeal the penalty was reduced to 375 million euros.

The EU's move against Apple will rekindle the conflict between Brussels and Big Tech at a time when businesses are being compelled to demonstrate how they are adhering to historic new regulations meant to promote competition and foster the growth of smaller tech competitors.

As a result of the act, these tech giants must abide by stricter regulations and permit competitors to disclose information about their offerings.
